Lighting the Spark of Literacy across Honduras
Our Programs
What we’re facing
Over 83% of 6th graders in Honduras read far below grade level (UNESCO ERCE 2019 Report). Learning loss from the pandemic and natural disasters in Honduras has only exacerbated this issue, creating devastating repercussions for children’s futures.
So, we focus on creating equitable access to books and reading opportunities, and we shift teaching from rote memorization to transformational pedagogy that fosters critical thinking and joy in reading. Here’s how we make the magic happen…
School Library Program
We co-create school libraries, reinventing existing infrastructure into an inviting, exploratory space filled with captivating book collections — often the children’s first experience reading for pleasure. We equip teachers and parents with customized, research-backed strategies to develop reading habits. Then, we provide two years of hands-on support so schools can fully embed and sustain literacy in daily learning.
Mobile Library Program
For schools which are too remote for our traditional library program, we created mobile backpack libraries. Each backpack holds 30- 50 books of various levels and genres, and each classroom has a reading corner to house the books while they stay with a teacher. Teachers in neighboring schools can switch their backpacks multiple times a year to have consistent access to new and exciting book collections.
Literacy Alliance Program (PAL)
We customize projects with other organizations in Honduras seeking literacy integration, leveraging our book collections and technical literacy expertise to support their vision for their communities. This allows partners to launch programming that would otherwise be cost prohibitive, as imported books are expensive and literacy expertise is rare in Honduras.
