In the high Honduran mountains of rural La Esperanza, library time is a weekly favorite of students at Southwest Bilingual School. They sort through the collection of used, English books, carefully tucking one in their book bag. Unfortunately, even in this well-loved library, Spanish books are rare because they are too costly to purchase in-country so most children have not grown up with a culture of reading in the home.
Help us raise $1,000 for these young readers (grades K-12) to grow as a family in cultivating a love of reading. With Spanish board books, 4-year-olds will be able to enjoy a story with their family while learning to manipulate pages. Beginning readers will develop confidence and fluidity by reading in their native language, while reading in English can be more like “work”. With Spanish chapter books, teens can feel proud of their language and heritage. We just need 10 people to donate $100 to reach our goal and give the gift of reading this holiday season. |
